GARY M. BROWN is the CEO of CMG Life Services Inc., a leading company in the life settlement industry. He joined CMG after a 31-year legal career, which included advising public companies on securities and board governance. Prior to joining CMG, he also taught securities law at the Vanderbilt University Law School and was general counsel to the Ethics and Compliance Officer Association. He co-chairs two of the Practising Law Institute’s national securities programs and is the author of one of PLI’s Securities Law and Practice Deskbook. While in private practice, he was recognized in both Best Lawyers in America and Chambers – America’s Leading Business Lawyers.

During 2002, Gary was Special Counsel to the U.S. Senate’s Governmental Affairs Committee in its Enron investigation. During 2010, he was retained by the U.S. Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations to assist in investigating the role of investment banks in the 2008 financial crisis. In those roles, he provided advice on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the Dodd-Frank Act while those pieces of legislation were being debated in the Senate.Gary received both his B.A. and J.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University, where he also was a member of the Order of the Coif.

Les has been working as an insurance industry professional for over 28 years. He has vast experience in the life settlements industry and has been involved in the development of valuation, pricing, and financial modeling for the past 7 years. Prior to joining the life settlement industry, he has over 20 years in the insurance industry as a consultant and CFO of a large regional insurance brokerage firm. While CFO, he developed several financial models used to track and report the employee benefit claims for insurance clients. An additional component of the reporting software was to predict the future expected claims and project the estimated renewal on their employee benefit coverages. Mr. Logsdon earned his Bacherlor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania as well as an MBA degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He is well versed in statistical methodology and utilizes Monte Carlo Simulation techniques in the life settlement industry to create predictive maturity models for the pools of policies owned by CMG’s clients.

Jule Rousseau and his colleagues have developed an expertise in the life settlement business and with premium finance structures used in the purchase of life insurance.  The firm represents clients in all facets of this business—policyholders, lenders, life settlement brokers and providers and hedge funds providing capital to the industry. Jule and a colleague recently tried and won the Florida jury trial involving the collection of death benefits from Lincoln National on behalf of the Cotton Trust, a case well known in the industry because it was tried under the “intent” standard imposed in Florida by two recent federal court decisions.

Jule advises clients on regulatory matters, particularly in the areas of compliance, licensing and market conduct, both in connection with life settlement business and in general areas of life, accident and health, and property and casualty. Our clients often rely on us to meet with state insurance departments around the country to deal with regulatory compliance issues. Jule has worked extensively with insurance departments in Texas, Georgia and Florida on behalf of insurers victimized by fraudulent insurance brokers. He has also been involved in projects concerning licensing issues in all fifty states; advising domestic, European and Asian insurers with respect to regulatory issues that affect their US operations. His practice also involves advising clients with respect to reinsurance, the wording of those contracts, and all matters relating to insurance policies, including wording and interpretation. He represents the National Conference of Insurance Legislators, a non-profit group dedicated to education and sharing ideas between legislators across the country. He also has represented the New York Insurance Department in its review and approval of the Lloyd’s of London scheme to create Equitas as the run-off reinsurer of old years’ liabilities.

Steve Boger is a Managing Director of Maple Life Analytics, LLC. His main focus is in the areas of actuarial analysis of life settlement portfolios, including valuations, cash flow analysis and risk measures and mitigation. Mr. Boger has been active in the Life Settlement market since 2004, working as a consultant to institutional investors. His experience includes development of pricing models and Monte Carlo simulation tools that are well recognized in the industry. Mr. Boger has conducted numerous actual / expected studies of underwriting results. Prior to his entry into the life settlement market, Mr. Boger ran the Structured Settlement profit center for a large US insurance company, as well as serving as the President of the National Structured Settlement Trade Association (NSSTA). Mr. Boger has a Bachelors degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Illinois, awarded with Distinction in 1978. He completed his actuarial exams in 1981 and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

David Beckelman

Mr. Beckelman has more than 15 years of experience in the insurance industry. He has held various senior positions in new product development and portfolio management. Mr. Beckelman was previously SVP & Chief Life Actuary for the AIG division responsible for investing in life insurance policies. At AIG, he was instrumental in the execution of the largest rated securitization of life settlements (Fieldstone I), the enhancement of the mortality tables and valuation methodology used for the management of the company’s life settlements portfolio, and the implementation of a financing structure that helped to support the portfolio. Mr. Beckelman has a B.S. in Actuarial Mathematics from University of Michigan, College of Literature, Science and Arts and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, as well as a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Since 2002, Mr. Freedman has led Coventry’s government relations efforts, overseeing Coventry’s legislative and regulatory strategy and representation in Washington, DC and all 50 states. He has been a leader in the development of life settlement laws in 40 states and over 60 different pieces of legislation.

Mr. Freedman’s proactive efforts on behalf of the secondary market for life insurance have led to the adoption of state laws throughout the US that regulate life settlements and focus on protecting the property rights of policyowners. Mr. Freedman frequently appears before public officials to advocate on behalf of the secondary market including testifying before the United States Senate Aging Committee in April 2009.     

Mr. Freedman has a long career of public service and advocacy. After working in New York’s executive and legislative branches of government, he worked in private practice at a major national law firm concentrating on federal, state and local government affairs. He was also a senior executive for a major international telecommunications company overseeing public affairs and public policy. Mr. Freedman received his Juris Doctor from the University at Buffalo Law School.

As LISA’s Director of Legislative & Regulatory Affairs, Michael supports a fundamental aspect of LISA’s efforts in the industry and its mission to help advance a transparent and sound regulatory structure to better benefit consumers and participants in the life settlements market. Michael’s regular duties include tracking of all currently proposed legislation and regulation, developing and implementing the association’s policies and objectives as they relate to government affairs, researching emerging developments within state insurance departments and industry associations, as well as maintaining communication with state and federal legislators, regulators, and their staff. Darryl Glatthorn is the Director of Capital Markets for Vida Capital, a life settlements manager in Austin, Texas as well as the owner/operator of a FINRA licensed broker dealer named Equus Financial Consulting.  Founded in 2004, Equus specializes in the private placement of alternative investments in hedge funds and private equity but has always maintained an active advisory practice in the life settlements market.  Through the years Equus has advised a number of market participants including Senior Settlements, Life Settlements Solutions, Nomura Securities, UBS and Caldwell Life Strategies.  Darryl has over 30 years experience in structured finance, derivatives trading and capital markets.

Prior to founding Equus, Darryl spent eight years as a Partner and Head Trader at Zweig DiMenna Associates, a $7B New York-based hedge fund. Earlier in his career, he worked as a Senior VP in derivatives sales at UBS, Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers.

Darryl has a BBA from Babson College in Wellesley MA where he majored in accounting and earned his CPA in the State of Texas.

Darwin Bayston is President and CEO of the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA).   His charge is to extend the outreach of the Association to all participants of the life settlement industry from consumers to capital providers, including producers, brokers, providers and service providers who are part of the life settlement market.

He was previously Managing Director of Life Settlement Consulting & Management (LSCM), founded in 2004 and specialized in life settlement policy and portfolio valuations, and life expectancy analysis.  He has published several articles and participated as speaker at a number of life settlement conferences.

Previous to that he operated an investment advisory firm. From 1980 to 1993, he served in several capacities, including President and CEO the CFA Institute (and its predecessor organizations).  While at CFA, he founded the continuing education program, was editor of the CFA Digest and supervised research projects funded by the Research Foundation of the ICFA.  He began his career as an investment analyst with a Midwest life insurance company.

Mr. Bayston has been Chairman of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation ($100 million), a member of the Hospital’s Finance Committee and a past member of the Board of the Institute for Quantitative Research and Finance (Q Group)
